Most of the northern suburbs of San Diego have town centers along the coast. If you lived and worked in Carlsbad, Oceanside, or Encinitas, or lived there and worked in downtown SD near Santa Fe Terminal, you could likely do without a car, as much as you could in many East Coast or Chicago burbs.
