I also have a 3G and am disappointed in the performance of 4.0 on the device. However, I also have no illusions that new software should continue to work on old hardware. The 3GS is over two years old. Do you also expect Snow Leopard to run on your G3 Powerbook? Do you expect Android Froyo to run on your HTC Dream?
You have to have realistic expectations of technology. The mobile space moves 10 times faster than standard platforms, and your expectations of performance on old devices should be adjusted accordingly.
Not to mention, 3.0 sucked on the 3G as well… Give them a few point releases to iron out the kinks… Not that I think 4.0 will run as smoothly as 3.0 on the 3G.
