it’s not like i don’t see the other side. clearly it is bad for people to be able to freely shoplift. But most people don’t shoplift. And most shoplifters don’t run. And shoplifters who run and use force to evade can be charged with robbery, a strike in California requiring prison unless there are unusual circumstances warranting probaiton. So it’s not like we’re soft on forceful shoplifters. maybe someone could market a gooey tracking device to sell to shopowners that adheres to clothing and operates like lojack which we could throw at shoplifters.
