I live in Central Pennsylvania, and I can recall one time that my gas plus electric ran in the $500 range. That was in a particularly cold winter month, living in a wood frame Victorian built in 1888 that had almost no insulation, in the winter of 2003/04.
Even with the difference in fuel costs, I can’t imagine that happening in Southern California.
