Unfortunately, I can't find it, but shortly after 587, followed shortly by Richard Reid's aborted attempt to bomb a flight, I read an article hypothesizing how a shoebomber sitting near the wing or tail (I forget which), after having assembled the bomb in the restroom, could have downed 587. Scary, and it's the reason why we have to take off our shoes when going through screening.
