Having lived here most of my life, I can say with confidence that there is plenty of land even between here and the desert. I think what you failing to grasp is that there are record high forclosures, house inventory, and both are generally expected to increase as time goes on, at least in the near future. This means that there are and will continue to be plenty of homes for buyers to choose from.
