Happened to us when we were house hunting in 1993. Except, it was the homeowner who ran out of cash while on a poorly thought out remodel and walked away from the home (to add to the tragedy, I think his family fell apart too). We were offered a good discount for the “unfinished pool”. We said no thanks. With a small child, we did not want a house with a hole in the ground at any price!
