Android is the only platform that has a chance of catching the iPhone. Only time will tell. At the least, they will push Apple to do better (interestingly, AAPL ended up in the green today).
Google is also investing BIG in alternative energies and are at the forefront of the coming cloud-computing revolution. They have plenty of opportunities to make money.
