Ever since some of the OT posts has gradually evolved from PG to more R related, I try to avoid visiting this site from corporate networks directly.
The fact is most large companies employ crap from companies like websense which essentially monitors internet traffic. Now, you probably won’t get a call from your IT dept if your company is large, unless you’re doing something egregious like visiting a lot of porn sites, file sharing music, etc. So you probably don’t have to worry, because most everyone at a big company spends some time on websurfing, and the IT department has a lot more things to do than just run stats on employees.
In reality, there’s probably times when you surf a lot because you are literally you’re stuck in tele-conference meetings that are counterproductive and rather do other things during that time, waiting for a software build, waiting for your IT dept to get some work done before you can proceed, etc, etc, etc, etc.
BUT consider this. Any legal issues you might get into, it’s one less footing for your case. For example, let’s say you get into some issue with your boss, and you feel like you’ve been unfairly terminated because of “performance”. If if you were wrongfully terminated, rest assured that any pissing match with your former employer, your weblogs and web usage will make it to your case. There was a little disclaimer you signed when you first joined a company that basically states you acknowledged the company has the right to do this. So if any of you are the sue happy types, you’ve been warned.
