There are only a few groups (employers and illegal immigrants, themselves) who benefit from illegal immigration, and the rest of society is expected to pay for it.
You hit the nail on the head CAR. While Harvey argued that the benefits may outweigh the costs, I question what exactly are the benefits of illegal immegrants for our Country and society and how do you quantify them?
The costs are pretty well documented but still difficult to accurately measure. But like you say, the only clear benefits are to the employers and immigrants (and more speficically their countries of origin in the form of remittances). The majority of Americans pay for it (in the form of higher taxes, higher health and auto insurance, lower quality schools, etc…)
This is why it makes so much sense to follow thru with the dream act.
We already paid for these kids’ schooling and health care. Now we have the ability to separate out the successes from the bad seeds. Pick out the good ones and throw out the bad. At the same time, formulate a viable and realistic legal immigration route that does not entail 10-15 years of waiting period while strengthen border enforcement. This is essentially a solid middle of the road approach that Obama has been pushing for.
