@ deadzone … shhhh, we don’t want to make the surf in northern baja crowded again 😉
I have been to Mexico 4 times in the last 12 months. 3x for surfing at various locations and once to Ensenada for fishing. As deadzone said, safe as ever (which is not very) but a little common sense goes a long ways. Here are my Mexico rules:
1) drive only during the day
2) no stopping in TJ
3) older modest cars (preferably unwashed) are better
4) get insurance
5) gated and guarded parking only (you have to pay)
I used to camp a lot between Rosarito and Ensenada when I was in still in school. Since about ’03 I have been staying in hotels/condos. There are lots of great deals, it is really deserted.
I know most of the scams and how to avoid them. The thing that amazes me is the people driving their $50k vehicle with $20k in toys in the trailer. No wonder they are a target, that is worth more than most Mexican families make in a decade.
I’ll be back to Ensenada next month to go fishing and back to Mexico again whenever a solid swell lines up with a weekend.
