Gorilla glass is scratch resistant. It’s not shatter proof. A screen protector will prevent scratches on the screen, but it would not have protected the screen from shattering even if it was on and your wife dropped it the same way.
If you happen to put your phone in the same pocket as your keys, with your keys rubbing back and forth on the screen, you need screen protector if it’s not gorilla glass.
The nexus S that I have I’ve thoroughly abused without a screen protector. It does not have any scratches on the glass. The galaxy nexus that I also have I’ve also abused has scratches on the screen.
