This is an interesting point.
But I would argue that suburbs here are the same as suburbs back east. And most people live in burbs.
I recently stayed with friends that live a block from Rittenhouse Square in Philly, then friends that lived in the mayfair neighborhood, then friends in montgomery county. (We followed Ben Franklins rule about fish and house guests…) We ended the trip at the jersey shore. I would argue that we met intellectuals in all locations. The architecture changed with each location. The dependancy on cars changed. But where we had historic sites in the first stop, we had a chance to help in the organic garden at the last. Both offered value. (The middle stop involved hanging at our hosts bar – The Grey Lodge.)
You get more of a European influence back east, probably, but you get more of an Asian influence here. I personally won’t put one as better than the other.
And to diss tech degrees… That is quite a judgement. Do you include Chem and Bio PhD’s in your disdain – because that’s what the parents of my kids classmates have. You seem to forget that San Diego has a decent bio-tech industry.
I just think people here are more laid back and less pretentious. If you think they’re less intellectual then perhaps you’re mistaking intellectuallism with pompousness. Or perhaps you need to broaden who you hang out with.
