You’re right, there’s no official language at the Federal level. There were many attempts to make English the official language, but it never passed. However, English is the de facto language. There are many states that do have English as the OFFICIAL language: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Languages_of_the_United_States California is one of those states. So, for all us Californian, English is the official language.
