I understand all this, brian, and, having traveled throughout the western and southern portion of the US, I actually take for granted the wide variety of fresh produce at reasonable prices available to residents of Cali and know why they are “reasonable.”
I actually agree with your statement except I DO NOT agree that undocumented (“unauthorized”) immigrants should be eligible for any kind of public assistance.
The impractical problem here is that they DO find themselves between jobs, get sick, get pregnant, get hurt, get arrested or have civil matters in court just like legal US citizens do. When any of these life events happen to an unauthorized immigrant, we ALL pay for the services rendered to them, one way or another. The Federal government has NEVER paid its fair share of reimbursement to CA for the cost of services to this population, and likely never will.
