Good, because I ain’t kidding about this sh!t. Democrats or Republicans (or any political party for that matter) have NEVER been friendly to asians or any “asian cause.” It’s my opinion that Democrats though (tradition fundamentalistic, pro-union, pro-labor, pro-blue collar ) have been far more hostile to Asians than Republicans.
A common misconception among asian americans is they feel like they are “protected” with a minority status, social policies and practices can’t possibly fvck them under the democrats “liberal” umbrella because they are minorities just like other minorities like african americans and hispanic. That’s where i think is huge mistake. Not all minorities are “protected equal” under the all the P.C./liberal ideology, as some of “liberal” policies have been specifically designed to benefit some minority AT THE EXPENSE OF hindering others.
For some reason or the other, it’s my observation that “cacausians americans” (sorry to put this in vague terms, but hopefully you’ll see my point) have been scared silly into being politically correct wrto race relations with african americans and to some extent hispanic, while being considerable less sensitive with say asians…Let me try to explain…
NOTE: i’m not terribly into being P.C., but you’ll see me point.
The biggest nightmare for any caucasian is to be accused to be a “racist” by an african american or hispanic, because you’ll get a shitstorm of social backlash and probably a visit of negative press from folks like Jessie Jackson. And so, it is to my observation that I’ve seen time after again and again at stores, that a poor white store clerk has to bend over backwards the moment a disgruntled african american or hispanic drops the “R(asict)” card. Call it caucasian fear of a being accused of being a bigot, but it’s just an interesting reaction that i see time and time again.
Now, if you’re asian american, as a social experiment, go to the store, and do the same thing. The moment you are getting shitty service, drop the “R” bomb, and see what kind of reaction you’ll get. Most likely, you’ll be treated like “sure whatever, dude, go sue me because i know you wont.”
I can’t count how many times my mom had to endure this. My mom is a fairly well educated, responsible, smart lady, far more so that your average j6p we encounter at the store. She does have an english accent, and does not necessarily have all the correct grammatical pronunciation correct, BUT she not a broken engrish speaker and I assure you is far more intelligent than that store clerk that can’t figure out how much change to refund to her if the register is broken. I forget how many times that I’ve been in a situation where the clerk tells her how much something is “$9.25”, my mom hesitates a bit (due to the fact that she was talking to me), and the idiot clerk opens the register and does something stupid like “1 one these bills, 4 of these bills, and one of these coins”…WTF???? Yeah you fvcking moron, my mom don’t need any math or engrish lessons from you. And every single time, it took me making a frickin seen at the store before I got an apology for my mom. And for you Costco lovers, this exactly happened numerous times at the Carlsbad Costco. You think this sort of shit happens when an african american or hispanic customer buys something?
BTW: DMV and government workers are the worst…Because while you could make a seen at a store to get an apology out of the store clerk, government workers know they can get away with it. What, you want to sue the government over some moron at the DMV that make funs of your mom’s engrish accent? Good luck.
And that my friend is exactly what I mean. Yes you are a minority, for the purpose of classification and statistical in nature. No, there is not a general fear of you for being “offended” and the same “sensitivity” that might apply between caucasians and other minorities doesn’t really apply to you.
And let’s look at this from social policy perspective. My favorite, affirmative action.
How many asian americans are really benefiting from affirmative action versus how many asian americans are really being fvcked over by college admissions quotas? As an asian american, have you ever stopped and thought about why is this the case, that some of these “liberal” policies that supposedly to benefit and encourage minority diversity is in fact backfiring on us? Why is it we have social policies that are suppose to increase diversity, and yet for some reason, where has this diversity ever been factored in for asian americans. I don’t see asians dominating businesses such that CEO’s and executives of major companies are nearing 50% such that asians aren’t considered minorities. So why is that I have never heard of affirmative action and asian americans used in the same sentence????? Still think you are a “protected minority”? Where are the politicians addressing that inequality, democrats or republicans, for that matter? So again, just because you’re a minority doesn’t mean America will treat you equality under the “minority” status.
Ironically, some of these “socializing” programs are suppose to level the playing field for some minorities, but asian americans don’t benefit from. On top of that, mainstream america often cites us asian americans as examples of all the ills of these programs we never were a direct beneficiary of NOR ever wanted.
Again, let’s use affirmative action. Some folks here have posted in the past on this board how unfair affirmative action is because it allows more asians to enter college programs and professions that they normally wouldn’t have qualified for if there weren’t a minority… For all you asian americans that are reading this, I know you’re laughing your ass off at this statement because you know as well as I know, the real reason why there are so many students in engineering, medicine, etc is because a lot of us worked our asses of to try to get into these professions, and if there wasn’t such a thing as quota limitation, there enrollment of asian students in the programs would probably skyrocket, purely based on qualifications.
I have still yet so meet any asian american that had ever been accepted into a college/profession or promotion strictly based on being asian, nor have I yet to meet any asian american that supports affirmative action. I had been a student member at the admissions board at an Ivy League school to witness far more asian applicants are routinely turned away not because of their “qualifications”, but rather in the interest of seeking more “diversity” in engineering.
Again, why oh why, is mainstream America pinning things like affirmative action on us is beyond me. I would fully support a more fairer system that was more based on economic need,irrespective or race. My rationale is some caucasian from rural south community that probably never sent folks to college would have the same consideration for an “affirmative action” as some african american or latino from the inner city. In my mind, if these social policies are really meant for giving “less fortunate people” more opportunity, they need to be unilaterally applied irrespective of race.
The current affirmative action program doesn’t address this. Fine, I accept that. But then, as a politican and as a political party, don’t tell me how “liberal” you are, and how “open you are” to diversity to get my vote, and at the same time, slam the door on my nuts by telling me, these “diversity” policies don’t apply to “you people” or worse, we have these more constraining policies specifically for “you people”. Diversity acceptance, my ass. Forget about a policy that gives preferential treatment to asians. I’m not asking for a welfare check…Just show me something as simple as fair, anti-discriminatory policy toward asians. Until then, your liberal “diversity” sham ideology doesn’t apply to me. Of course if I ever outwardly speak out against this unfair, unequal policy, you can always shut me down by saying I’m a “racist” if I’m white or a “minority traitor” if I’m “asian”. But that’s what you liberals do. You like to pretend to be all inclusive and all fakey smiley out side, when really some of your policies are pretty dividing and discriminatory in nature. Sure, we can make fun of Bush by putting his face on the picture of a monkey as a political statement. BUT, if we were to do that with Obama. Oh, no. That would be “racist”. In fact, if we don’t vote for Obama, that would be “racist”.
I feel sorry for some caucasians that have been so whipped into being overly politically correct with certain demographics, that you can’t even carry on a basic conversation anymore with someone not caucasian without the fear of being branded a bigot or racist. In the end, a lot of you are extremely careful in talking with some demographics, while I guess, completely reckless in interacting with others out of compensation.(usually the ones that are “harmless” or more quiet). As a result, in order for you to treat my mom “normally” and fairly in the store, I have to resort to the same yelling/screaming/occasionally throwing the “R” bomb out there just to get your attention, because obviously you were so effective at being overly cautious with being politically correct for certain demographics. BTW: under normal situations, I’m sure we would have been friends, but I understand why you won’t be inviting me to your weekend BBQ.
Ok, let’s move on. Let’s talk about jobs. Let’s be real. Where are the biggest issues these days? The fear “outsourcing”, “losing” jobs to overseas companies. A educated politican might be well verse into carefully distingiush “China” the nation, or “India” the nation from “chinese people” or “indian people” wrto economic issues. BUT media isn’t so careful in this distinction and joe-blue-collar that is about to lose his manufacturing job isn’t gonna take the time to distinguish “china” from “chinese people” or “chinese americans” for that matter. How many time and time again do you see in the headlines “the chinese XYZ are doing this”, the “indians XYZ are doing this”. Something as stupidly simple as the women’s gymaastics underage issue during the olympics. You know how many times I got asked if I thought they were cheating or not, in the context of “you’re chinese, what do you think?” Obviously, I’m like wtf, how would I know???? Consider what would have happened if I voiced an opinion along the line of “I don’t know, but why is the media making such a big deal out of this”. I’m sure the next logic conclusion was I was “supporting china’s women gymnastics”. Now this is purely a stupid issue, but fast forward to next year, when we have trade relation issues with China. If my opinions will not “jive” with other americans… If I have the opinion that to avoid this outsourcing, you just have to be better than everyone else versus the more socialist/protectionist viewpoint that we need to have a protectionist viewpoint on american jobs such that the chinese don’t “steal our jobs”, will I be viewed as a traitor or being unamerican? Think about it. As an asian american, you don’t have that “get out of jail free, R(ascist)” card you can pull out of the hat to make one wrong right. Think carefully, which political party is more likely to point the finger at “foreign competition” as the problem…
Some minorities such as african americans have reached a level of organization such that it will never again face a widespread social issue in america. Yes, there will be isolated issues here and there of discrimination, bigotry,unfairness. But, there will never be a case of a widespread backlash against all african americans. It’s a remarkable achievement, because it shows a collective, unified effort one’s ethnicity if society in general crumbles. Each ethnicity really needs to do something similiar to protect a global backlash, if it were to happem. Belonging to a political affiliation isn’t helpful, because there is no one party that really is there in the interest of protecting one specific minority. The minority group needs to achieve a political clout that can exert some level of political clout to influence policies. And quite frankly, asian americans have not organized well enough and reached enough political clout to really prevent such a social backlash if it were to occur targeted against asians. There are numerous of reasons for this
Problem #1: asians in america span too many different cultures and ethnicities that don’t always get along.
Problem #2: asians in america don’t usually get involved in social issues and don’t usually significantly organize for this, if it’s not a direct relationship to money. (I’m being serious here)
Problem #3: a social problem with one asian ethnicity in america is viewed as “their problem”, not “our” collective problem
Problem #4: a good portion of asian americans are pretty good at dis-associating with other asians as soon as possible, thinking they are “white” if they act “white” or hang out exclusive with others that aren’t asian. Asian women are great at doing this. And frankly it’s really not their problem, because all the social ills of asian-americans plight will be the burden of the asian men, as asian women will simply be viewed as the “accessory” to a caucasian husband and not be the subject of any social/political issues with China or India.
I don’t understand why any asian american (chinese specifically) isn’t concerned about the future prospects. Perhaps some are living in la-la land thinking this time it will be different, or perhaps some of us have really dyed our hairs blond to avoid this mess. I don’t know. What I do know is that it took several decades and a Republican president (Reagan) to formally apologize the last time america royally fvcked over the last asian americans.

I have advice for some of you asian american tech workers in the defense industry (although probably too late now). Get out now…If any of you are familiar with the “Red Scare” back in the 50ies, consider this a resurgency back to this over the next 4 year, this time with China. You don’t want to be in the middle of any witchhunt. Jobs are replaceable, income is replaceable. Being falsely accused of being a spy and being thrown in jail sort of limits your career opportunities. So why take a chance? Remove yourself out of the equation, and get a non-defense related job.
For an encore performance, perhaps this is the way you get people into more homes. The good news for those of you waiting for affordable housing is that, your dream will come true if they start shipping us back to concentration camps over the next 4 years.
At that point, some of you can also stop bitching about how many “asians” there are in 4S ranch and Carmel Valley, because at that point, there will be fire sale prices. Forget the fact that using the Roosevelt playbook will fvck over harding working people that paid their dues. All that matters is we have more affordable housing right?
