Ack! El Indio is horrible! It has the whole ‘history’ thing going for it, but it saddens me that tourists go there thinking it is the epitome of Mexican food. Every time I go there I am disappointed and reminded of the ‘Mexican’ restaurants I’ve gone to in the Pacific Northwest — basically, about as Mexican as Taco Bell. I’m sorry, but chips drowned in melted cheez-wiz is not Mexican food. Blech! Maybe I’m just spoiled by my Mexico City-born grandmother in law’s cooking.
Cuatros Milpas is GREAT, but never had El Cuervo or Carnitas Uruapan. I will try them out, thanks for the tips. I will say that nothing beats a drunken 2:30am carne asada burrito from La Posta (near El Cuervo).
I’m curious about why you say Tacos El Gordo is expensive? Last time I went it was $1.25 per taco. They’ve certainly raised their prices since they started, but you can still get an excellent authentic meal there for way cheaper than you can get that fake Mexican crap at El Indio.
I forgot to mention my other favorite: El Zarape at the end of Park Blvd in University Heights. The shrimp burrito there is sublime.
Talking about Mexican food is way more fun than talking about swine flu.
