You probably dont want the same want as me. I wanted to just expand from my basic basic cable to soemthing with more channels like CNN for a couple of months. I didn’t want to pay $40+ extra on top of the $13 I was paying for for basic. So I just called up att and got the no frills as basic as basic on u-100 package (not even HD even though I have an HD tv).. I do not have a DVR, because I did not want to pay extra for it (sorry).
As far as the internet speed, I got the Express internet on U-verse. My speed isn’t isn’t that great, namely because i think where my home is, the line is flaky. I think its about 484k downstream/248k upstream for me, which isn’t that great. You can get higher speeds if you home has ethernet pre-wired and use use the ethernet interface on the u-verse gateway to receive the signal. The u-verse gateway can take the signal via ethernet OR via coax…but the ethernet interface allows for a faster rate. My home isn’t prewired with ethernet, so I just used the existing cable coax to run the signal to the u-verse gateway.
The nice thing is the uverse gateway is also a built in router with 4 ports and 802.11g enabled. You have basic firewall configuration you can do, as well as MAC address filtering on the wireless (no frills router, but it does it’s job for most of what most people need). the DHCP address pools are configurable and you can manual setup the assigned address to more than one of your computers (i was really low tech, my previous wireless router didn’t allow you to do this)..
I don’t download/stream videos that much at home.
Cable is probably still faster and more reliable, unless you happen to live an a area which can support the higher speed and you are willing to pay more.
The uverse receiver also allows you to display your flicker pictures directly on your tv if you tune to a particular channel. Yeah, I can be one of “those” annoying people when friends come over.
