A number of owners of large agricultural acreages in CA’s Central Valley have been paid by the Federal gubment NOT to grow anything or conduct any ranching activities on their land in the past 15 years or so. One only has to drive up I-5 from Bakersfield (as well as along the lower SR-99) to see this phenomenon in person.
