40 minute workout on the elliptical every other day. Very intense interval training. Pros: It’s very easy on the joints, which is good because I’m 50 and I tore my ACL a few decades ago (recent research indicates that running may not be bad for your knees, unless they’re unstable – as they would be if you’ve torn your ACL). It’s great for cardio (although when I first got it I my muscles tired before I could get my heart rate to maximum). It works a lot of muscles. It increases your muscle mass, especially in the hips/glutes/thighs, and also in the arms, shoulders and torso. And of course this lean mass burns calories. I highly recommend it to any middle aged or better who want a good work out without much joint stress. Cons: you’re inside and you stay in one place. I’ve got my DVR and HDTV right there, so it’s not too bad. I lost 15 pounds and have kept it off for 5 years without any real change in diet.
