Why the purple dancing fork would you want to waste time mowing and painting when there are better things to do with your life? A house is nothing but a noose around the owner’s neck unless it’s bringing income. I understand having a veggie and flower garden, perhaps on a patio, but mowing a lawn is just dull.

BTW – it’s only inferior in an area where kids can’t walk to school, to the park, etc by themselves. Where I grew up, kids do it all the time and no one gives them a second glance.

As far as annoying the neighbors, you ultimately have to be willing to tell the neighbors to shut up and piss off.
