I don’t know about their ‘fluff’ on 3-D printing, but I know that where I work, we use it a lot for prototyping. I don’t think that it is very effective for bulk manufacturing… too slow. You build up layers by 1/20th to 1/100th of an inch.. even smaller in some cases.
In terms of Motley Fool themselves.. I tend to find the quality of their ratings to be ‘all over the place’.. and things tend to be more hyped these days, than factual. Don’t ignore them completely. Too many people follow them.. so consider them the leaders of a ‘herd’.. not necessarily that the direction of the herd is correct.
Also.. don’t forget that ‘moat’ is important. For 3D printing.. the following might put things in more perspective: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RepRap_Project A DIY 3D plastic printer…
Well, I wasn’t considering 3-d printing as an investment direction. It was just one of the examples that M.F. was pitching as to where to invest. I was more curious what folks felt about their track record (besides calling AO-Hell)….
Generally, I’m pretty skeptical about investment “advice” from the media. I am biased and think by the time they write about something (even if they are correct), everyone else already knows it..So they are really writing old news. The only thing I think one can do is do one’s on due dilgence….But I was curious if anyone actually followed M.F. and could comment on how their track record of calls (obviously before they happened)..
I mean, to me.I kinda lump M.F. in the same category as Jim Cramer…Entertaining..Maybe lucky a few times. But overall, just entertaining. But I was really hoping someone else would prove me wrong. I feel like an pessimistic old fart…..
FWIW: one of M.F.’s infomercials was talking about dassault systemes, which I kinda chuckled about.
