Zoll, 61, did not return calls to home or work numbers for this story. He worked six years for the city of Carlsbad before retiring in 2009. He also worked 37 years in the county sheriff’s department.
He retired at 58, after working for 43 years, and he gets $3.2k/month for 6 years spent in Carlsbad.
So he start working for the sheriff’s department at age 15? Did he drop out of school?
Well, when I was a teen, I remember the LA Sheriff came on campus to recruit folks. I remember speaking to someone from Lomita dept….At the time they were desperately looking for recruits. I remember to apply, you just needed a H.S. diploma, meet minimum height requirements, and there was some sort of exam of sort, that was a basic R/W of some sort. The guy I spoke to was an ex-aerospace machinist. He switched over to be cop because he wanted the job security. Nice guy… There weren’t many people in our school that were interested. Except maybe 4-5 people. They were the same people that had a major boner for authority and being in charge, 1 I believe was a borderline bully at school..
I pretended to be interested at the time, because I wanted to get to know the officer patrolling around our school at the time. I thought it might come in handy in case I got a few tickets…Have to admit, the idea being a cop at the time was kinda cool.
