I’m with you here, but it’s not as dire as your polling numbers show.

For example, here are the Real Clear Politics polling numbers for October 31, 2007 a full year before the 2008 Presidential Election:

28.8% Giuliani
17.3% Thompson
14.5% McCain
10.8% Romney
7.2% Huckabee
2.8% Paul

As we all know, McCain won the Republican nomination in 2008, and he was only polling at 14.5% in October 2007.
