Let me clarify that I’m no dissing the whole concept of suburbs.
If you live in Sorrento Valley and live in Mira Mesa or 4S ranch, that’s fine.
If you live and work in Temecula, that’s fine too.
If you work and live in Irvine, that’s cool.
Carlsbad is great if you want to live near the ocean. It’s great for kids because it’s near Legoland. Even better if you work near Palomar Airport Rd.
Suburbs have evolved and as AN, pointed out, there is diversity and variety such as ethnic stores in the new suburbs. I found out that in Irvine there is a huge supermarket with all kinds of Persian and Middle Eastern food (I made lamb couscous just to be suspiciously unamerican on 9/11). http://wholesomechoice.com/#
It’s very different to live in a suburb near the coast in Southern California than living in the traditional suburb and commuting to the city for work. So Cal does not represent the rest of the country.
I believe there is a trend away from communiting long distances to work in search for a house with picket fence.
Young professionals are more educated these days and they are more likely to choose more vibrant areas to live. And that will contribute to the densification of existing areas, rather than the building new suburbs and exurbs like happened 30 years ago.
It’s likely that an average 50 year old American when growing did not know what Sushi, Pad Thai and tapernade were. Now, university students expect all of it.
Brian, with all due respect. Being that you’re most likely a white guy, why do you always talk about diversity so much? I mean, it’s too the point that you’re obsessed with it as if it’s some level of enlightenment …And all this stuff of about young professional are more educated…Why the obsession? Unfortunately in this world, there are a bunch of people who aren’t the most “educated” people with A+’s/etc. But it doesn’t me that they are people who are uncouth/vulgar/unrefined/lacking morales or principles/unsuccessful etc. Some of the nicest/simplest people to understand that I run into are the ones that don’t have that crafty mind and do/plot things with hidden agendas….
