The flash mob phenomenon is definitely under-reported, but has hit not only Philly, but Chicago and Milwaukee (Milwaukee!), too.
I think there is definitely a bad vibe out there and its only going to get worse.
The point below about France and the bifurcation of classes is also important: Many of those communities are tinderboxes. Add in the social networking component and you can take these events viral (Arab Spring, anyone?).
