You should check out 92024 and the Southernmost portion of 92009 (which falls in Encinitas Elementary School District and San Dieguito Jr/Sr High District). You will find more homes in your price range many with low or no Mello Roos or HOA fees and they will be nicer than Carmel Valley. The lifestyle here is fabulous and the only drawback is the commute to Sorrento Valley is about 30 minutes. Coming from the east coast, I consider that a short commute but to many folks from other parts of the country it is excessive. If it is not excessive to you, make sure to look into it. I think its the nicest part of SD for young professional families.

FWIW, I have a 5th grader in the GATE program who is wrapping up the 6th grade math curriculum at this moment and have been very pleased with his school.
