    The glut of condos in downtown is one of the reasons I got out of the landlording business.

    When real estate doesn’t sell it becomes rentals.

    There will be many thousands of condos downtown that will be rentals in coming years.

    These rentals will depress the local rental market (although maybe not the market for single-family houses on their own lots).

    Great for renters – bad for landlords.

    To all you landlords who bought rental property in the last two years: Get out while the gettin’s good (OK, so you missed the chance to get out while the gettin’s good but you still have a change to get out – suck it up and take the loss now – it’s only going to get worse).

    I have lived in downtown San Diego for 5 years now, and I can categorically say that things have deteriorated down here with respect to crime and homelessness during that time. I sold my place in 92103 last year and now rent a very nice place in 92101 for a reasonable price. There are drug dealers within 100 feet of my front door that the police won’t do anything about. Schizophrenics, addicts, and thugs roam the streets unchecked. I have found 9mm cartridges outside my office door. At some point in the last 5 years, I became infected with tuberculosis and had to undergo a 9 month regimen of nasty antibiotics. I recommend a TB test for anyone living or spending time down here, because the infection rate among these transients is very high and you can get it simply by breathing the same air. Unless we get a new economic model down here that provides solid middle class jobs, I don’t anticipate good things for downtown SD.

    Has the city planned for any parks? Is there 1 park downtown? I don’t think there’s one square, with a statue, a few benches, shady trees, grass and some swings. Someone please let me know if there’s some OPEN NATURAL space planned down there….

    Which district are you living in? Little Italy? East Village? Marina? Columbia? Where?

    What you said makes me think hard, the downtown condos range from $400-$800 per square foot, it is like a shoe box as people described, but with that kind of price you’ll expect a better living condition.

    So, what makes you still stick to 92101, there must be some good things there to hold you down, care to share some?

    East Village, but there are big problems also in Little Italy, at least with the homeless. A buddy of mine lives in the Treo building and there are several large homeless camps within a couple of hundred yards of that building. I don’t know about the other neighborhoods.

    I don’t worry about the crime as much as the public health issues like TB. People from the suburbs come down to watch a ballgame and end up taking the germs back with them to Rancho Penasquitos or wherever. Bacteria don’t care about how much money you make.

    I stay here because I rent a nice, large place for $1.20/sf. Also I’m single and it’s good to be downtown for entertainment purposes. Being single in the suburbs is a drag.

    Be careful about bashing downtown…some people on this board might be offended (as I learned a few days ago by giving my opinion on where I live in Mira Mesa). All kidding aside, I for one, appreciate the negative and positive posts regarding living experiences and situations in San Diego. Things change so quickly around here lately.

    This isn’t bashing, just statement of fact. I enjoy living down here, but it’s not for everybody. And everyone needs to be aware of the TB risk. I wasn’t and I paid for it.

    Probably because all of these condos are being built in the area where I once got a gun pulled on me.

    I can’t wait to see these areas revert back to slums with laundry hanging off the patios because welfare doesnt provide enough money for people to use dryers.
