The regular taxes did not go to the fire department because the fire department was in the city and Cranick did not live in the city or pay city taxes. The fire department was in no way funded by his taxes.
What is sad and tragic is that his pets died in the fire.
The guy who burned trash in a barrel, too close to his house, and failed to subscribe to an optional service for fire protection for non-city residents… Not a lot of sympathy for him. But I feel bad for the pets.

I’m sure when firefighters see so many tragic things, it just makes them numb…
I do like exploring the idea of a private firefighting team. I mean, I sort of understand why it might be harder to do with police. But firefighting seems pretty standard to me. Yes, it requires training and experience. But it’s not about enforcing laws, dealing with criminals etc….
