For Brian hating America is preferable to hating himself. The flag symbolically provides him with an object for his free floating anxiety and keeps him from succumbing to the debilitating and crushing weight of his true self-loathing. Let him attack the people and institutions in this country. Everyone sees through his petty and continuous assaults on all things American: from Palin to Bush, his hatred keeps him from thinking about his life. His hatred keeps him alive.
That’s pretty rich coming a side that’s spewing hate.
Listen to conservatives these days. They hate everything. I’m not hearing anything positive coming from their mouths.
– Hate Obama
– Hate Health Care Reform
– Hate direction of the country, etc…
Why not make a positive change in your own life and improve your own education rather than blaming others for not learning your language.
Accept change, embrace change and make the best of out it. That’s positive to me.
I think you’re glossing over things here a bit and have things completely backwards.
I think many folks who are fiscally conservative don’t “hate obama” because he is a liberal (he isn’t by the way).
A lot of the fiscal conservatives hate him because in or view, in our mindes, we are the ones that are “making positive change in your our own lives and are the more educated”…because we didn’t count on any of this bailout to keep afloat.
Meanwhile, It’s all the folks got burned by signing onto toxic loans, not getting a higher education, complaining about outsourcing and trade protectionists (like UAW/auto/etc), who are the ones “blaming others for not learning your language” and Obama trying to cater to making these people (who arguably made poor decisions and who normally should assume moral hazard) whole by continuous subsidies that everyone else who is or trying to make a positive change in their own lives is paying for….
How about learning Spanish rather than feeling bitter that others won’t learn English?
Until the United States changes it’s official language from English or officially is bilingual, anything but the English language is/should be an “optional” language, at the sole discretion of the individual/family/or parent.
The government/educational institution is oversteping it’s boundary when it tries to cram down kid’s throats what people need to celebrate in terms of other people’s culture/holidays/customs/etc at a PUBLIC school institution, which is funded by tax payers.
It’s completely different if you are at a charter school or private school in which people pay/signup for that specialization. At a public school, one cannot choose where to enroll.
In Carmel Valley, there was a time there was an initiative to make Spanish a more mandatory class for kids, which was quickly shot down…And frankly, I was a big proponent of it getting shot down, as were several other parents who were from different cultures. It would have made no difference if instead of Spanish, it was Chinese/Korean/Hindu/(substitute your other foreign language here). The issue here is again, while I do plan on my kid learning to be trilingual and currently doing so at her private preschool…IT’S MY DECISION… NOT A PUBLIC SCHOOL’S DECISION. It’s no different if in a public school, they tried to teach about God and the Bible and ask to say a prayer…which Brian you being a liberal, I’m sure you would object to… if your employer/school made you say a prayer or “praise” Jesus when you walk in each day, I’m sure you would have some objection to this.
To me, respect includes not only respecting cultural diversity from those other cultures, but also respecting those who do NOT wish to participate in the diversity. You cannot force someone to “be more diverse”, and those that choose to not participate in any “diversity program” should not have his/her rights interfered…And it’s a complete fallacy to catogorize folks that do not wish to participate in a cultural diversity event/program as being “racist” or “disrespectful” or “narrow minded”
Those kids were wearing old navy t-shirts, probably had no intention to stir a ruckas. Any kid that took offence to those kids wearing an old navy t-shirt, needs to learn to grow a thicker skin and stop hiding under the free-pass of being a minority. Enough is enough.
