Briansd1,
Again why don’t we use your particular case as a case study? I’m really curious as to this exercise (and no, I’m not a complete advocate of being a home “owner”.
How long have you rented and on average how much have you paid for rent per month?
I’ve rented since 2005 and I’ve paid anywhere from $2,000 to $3,000 per month.
I would have paid much more to live in equivalent homes if I had bought them.
So you are fresh out of school, relatively. You started working in 2005? If so, I would say definitely shouldn’t be considering buying at all.
Second, as a single person, you are an excellent case study because you don’t have all the other external factors to consider (family, wife, children, school district, etc). Which brings me to the next question….If you are single and spending 2000-3000/month on rent, are you really saving money? Seems kinda large footprint for a single person. Several families with 4 people spend that much for housing. Answer the question, and I’ll draw an analogy. But it seems strange to me that you would be spending this much for rent as a single person if you are interested in saving.
