But Kennedy was one of our greatest Presidents and, after one year in office, we can declare Obama a failure, right?[/quote]
Pri: Out of curiosity, when you say Kennedy was one of our greatest presidents, is this because you consider him to be, or you feel the general consensus is such?
I ask only because I don’t think the latter is true. I think he’s become a larger-than-life figure, but sadly this is due in the main to his being assassinated. Much of his legacy is open to question, especially the issue of Vietnam and what would have happened had he not been shot in Dallas in 1963 (i.e. proving or disproving the notion that LBJ was simply continuing his work by escalating the war there).
I also think its too soon to write off the Obama Presidency, but sufficient time has passed to begin a fair review of what he’s done so far and compare his promises to his accomplishments. Fair or no, he’s going to come in for heavier scrutiny, and simply because of who he is and how he ran. The danger of his rhetoric and oratorical ability has always been that people will hold him higher and thus he’ll have further to fall. We’re seeing that now, especially among independent voters.
