Capeman: You dog! I was going to recommend Piatti and you beat me to it. Great choice. Upscale (enough), with a real good ambiance and menu, but you could still bring a kid. Neat area, too, down by La Jolla Shores.

Extraordinary Desserts rocks. My wife flew to Texas a few years back to help out with a family emergency and the only place that would calm my distraught daughter was Extraordinary Desserts. I explained to the staff that she was upset that Mom would be gone for ten days and they pampered the heck out of her: Hot chocolate (which was amazing), chocolate pastry and a bar to eat on the way home.
