Whew !
Guess I can stop beating my chest and declaring how American I am now.
So, folks. As you may have heard, America’s economy is in the toilet and we are still losing more jobs every day.
General Motors, once the largest and arguably most respected corporation in the World has gone thru bankruptcy and no one knows for sure if it will ever recover.
We have just hit our largest budget and trade deficit and, well, you probably know the rest.
It took a long time to come to this point and I don’t think too many feel it will be anything but a long time to recover from it. Things looks pretty bleak and even the new Admin is having a tough time sorting it all out.
So what can we as Americans do, in some small way to help out ? By continuing to gorge on imported goods and allow our manufacturing base to decline into oblivion?
If you think that might not be the way to go for the foreseeable future, given the cards we have been dealt or dealt ourselves, then I have a teenie-tiny idea where to start.
Join me in asking Jeff Bridges, the very popular and respected celebrity, to take a stand by dumping the very successful Hyundie ads he is involved with and come back to pitch for the home team.
I realize the economic woes are not his fault. And he does have the freedom to make an honest living just like anyone else in the U.S. of A.
And, by jeepers, I really, really like the guy.
But we could really use his help right now, today, before things get worse.
This is just a very, very small step to give the controversial American auto industry a bit of a leg up, deservedly or not. Right now, it doesn’t matter why it happened; just how to fix it.
The free market is not always the only solution. It’s not protectionism. Or socialism. Or any of the other unacceptable labels. It’s just common sense.
