For budget granite,I have done several counter tops with the 12×12 granite squares.
The last time I found the exact tile my wife and I wanted for $2.50 per square because we bought the end of the lot and was willing to take a few chipped ones.It was “spring green”, which I had seen seeing at about $10 per square foot at the time.In slab it would be much more of course. Chipped edges are cut and used to to fill in smaller pieces. For $350 I got enough to do two decent sized kitchens. I did a coordinated color, full back splash (to the bottom of the upper cabinets and range hood). These were nice Italian tiles and cost a bit, but entire kitchen including a 24 sq ft. Island cost $2000 including labor to install the tile, after I put in the backer board. It has a simple bullnose edge.I have extra tiles in case some get chipped. The grout lines are small and don’t bother me anyway.
