The American carmakers made SUVs because STUPID AMERICANS bought them. They have the highest profit margin of any vehicle. They are just trucks with leather and a nav system and they were a king cash crop for many years. High gas prices finally convinced STUPID AMERICANS that driving them might not be such a great idea. The only thing I blame detroit for is for not looking far enough ahead and saving their $$$ for when the SUV gravy train stopped. GM is at least attempting to with the Volt but of course everyone here will say it is DOOMED.
Detroit can’t compete directly with Japan and Korea because if they try they will get their ass handed to them. The profit margins on your typical toyota or kia are much smaller; the Japanese and Koreans can do what they do in large part because their industry has been built with the help of their government over many decades. So to avoid competing directly, detroit builds many of their cars for the rental/leasing market rather than direct consumer. That’s why so many of their offerings seem uninspired; they’re going to be rentals for the most part.
The UAW and crooked leaders in detroit are a part of the problem sure but that’s not the whole story. Of course here on this website the socialism and union boogeymen are always at fault.
Back to sleep boys and girls. How are your beet farms coming? You’d better listen to old uncle Borat when he tells you you need to learn to grow and eat your own beets! They are better for you than mcdonalds. Besides you’re not going to be able to afford mcdonalds in a few years. Then you will all be clamoring for socialism and this board will be full of marxists.
The only sensible response this forum can muster?
As I said before, I have had my ass handed to me on this topic many times before and this forum is the least creative in its anti-American parroting.
On the genious who used the Aztec for an example of bad American cars:
From CNN:
“Tagged: Ugly
Pontiac Aztek
Life span: 2001-05
Sadly, the Aztek could have been a successful vehicle if it hadn’t been quite so hideous.
On certain rare occasions a car company can produce a model that many people find unattractive and yet, somehow, it ends up finding an adoring market. The Honda Element is one example. The Chrysler 300 is another.
Unfortunately, it didn’t turn out that way with the Aztek. In its five year production run, just 115,000 were made. The crossover SUV’s exterior, reminiscent of Pablo Picasso’s cubist period, doubtlessly drove away many buyers who might have loved the versatile vehicle packaged inside. The Aztek was always highly rated by its owners, garnering top scores in J.D. Power’s owner satisfaction surveys.”

Oh and for the genius who posted on my car being made in Mexico:
From KBB:
2005 Buick Rendezvous

Country of Origin United States
This is the thing that makes me mad. You people are so blinded by your corporate and elite programming that you will even go so far as to make totally misleading statements to make US car makers look bad. Does that make any sense to your own well being? Your country? Your fellow worker bee?
OK I get it, you are total Toyota and Honda automitons, great for you! However, it would be refreshing to see just a little common sense applied to this arguement for once.
