It was that ad featuring the Gavin Newsom speech where he said “This door’s open now! It’s gonna happen, WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT!”. I have a real problem with an elected official telling me I going to get something whether I like it or not.

I agree with this and I think it was very smart on the YES camp to use that video over and over because it’s very irritating.
Did anyone notice that the NO campaign never had any reference to anything gay or homosexual? I never saw a single ad make reference to it (correct me if I’m wrong). It was all implied. What’s there to hide? Why no gay people in the commercials? Why is there absolutely no reference to gay marriage? I mean, you don’t want to sidetrack a campaign about gay people with gay people? I’m not stupid; I know why they did the ads the way they did. But I felt it was disingenuous. Go ahead and say it’s because the real issue is about rights and discrimination. But you know it’s about rights and discrimination of gay people and it conveniently was never mentioned.
Before I get hated on please let me say that I also voted no on 8.
But the above is very true. I remember a certain ad against 8 that had a rather famous actors voice talking about interracial marriage, and other forms of discrimination suffered in the past. It never once said anything to do with “homosexual” “gay” “lesbian” “same sex” etc etc etc. It was purly filled with a hard edged “if you vote for this you are a racist, bigoted, hateful person who should just put on a KKK robe.” Calling people out like this does not win votes.
Another ad had a nice elderly couple talking about a daughter you never see. If this is such an important issue, why do we never see the daughter with her partner/wife? What we do see is a nice traditional ‘grandparent’ couple. Nice image, but people are suspecious when being sold a bill of goods where they dont actually get to see the people truly affected by this. Why the subterfuge?
People recoiled from this, same as they did from the courts overturning a voter initiative. And the ALCU/Lambda legal challenges will only solidify the resentment against gay marriage. If courts can shove this down peoples throats, after they have voted “TWICE” (in very high voter turnout elections BTW) against it, what is the point of having an admendable constitution? Why not just let the courts decided if/when things should change.
And Newsom is at it again. He said that he will continue to preform these marriages until forcefully stopped (I think he means a cease and desist order, not an arrest warrent). Agents of the state shouldnt get to pick and chose which laws they feel like following. If he doesnt like it that much he can always quit in protest and start fighting the proper way; as a private citizen.
