Loreto MX. Very safe, beautiful, cheap and sleepy town in Baja easily accessed via cheap flights from TJ. World class fishing, very good food, culture, natural beauty and one of the most beautiful golf courses Ive ever played. Visited just before things locked down. Will go again
Aren’t you both cheap and retired?
Big Sur is expensive and boring.
Go to Thailand and Laos, which are full of Buddhist monks and $25/night luxury hotels. Outside of cities basic hotel rooms are often $2 or $3 a night.
Here’s a collection of random tourist photos in Laos:

Loreto (down in baja) is a fun and not all that difficult road trip,… on the way there are lots of small “missions” to visit

Flights were about $100 r/t. Not worth the time, effort or risk driving. Took my friend for his birthday who hates driving. Wont drive to Vegas, always flys. Was nervous going to Mexico but he ended up loving it and wants to go back. TPC Danzante Bay was spectacular. 17th hole is epic!
