Money can’t buy you happiness….
BUT…
It sure can come pretty darn close!July 2, 2020 at 9:31 AM #818615zkParticipantIf you can avoid worrying too much about black swans and such, always having enough to pay the bills and cover (more normal) emergencies and never worrying about the rent is less stressful than not having any money. I don’t know how much more can be said for it than that.
I think having tens of billions would be stressful. I would feel an obligation to figure out just the right way to help. Should I be fighting, say, malaria, like Bill Gates? Should I promote societies that promote justice and equality like George Soros? There are countless ways to make a relatively significant difference if you have that much money. And you get to / have to pick.

In that vein, I uber if I am worried there will be parking issues. Airport parking is a bit cheaper than two uber rides, but ads a small layer of unpleasantness. When I visit Grama’s house every year, the last few years I have also been Ubering rather than renting a car. A little more expensive, but no more waiting in car rental lines and screwing around looking for a good quote.

It sure can come pretty darn close!
my greatest personal extravagance is expensive fermented beet juice from farmers market. 10$ for a small bottle.
I believe it has curative properties. also i like the seller. i feel a small surge of happiness when i buy it.
and also my monthly donation to the buddhists in escondido. also feel good about that.
i guess my main expenditure was alcohol when I used to drink. but thats over because i cant control myself.
what else do i spend money on…hmmm…not much. my phone is 4 plus years old. a resilient samsung s7. the battery’s a little weak, but i just bought a small portable battery i carry in my bag with it.
3 cars worth about 35k together.
it all just gets put automatically in little buckets…I’m not complaining. id be more stressed out than i am if I were living on the edge. Just that not only doesnt money buy happiness, it’s practically not even useable for savers. If I didn’t have a wife and kids, I’d probably spend close to zero.
what is anyone’s life, really?
You wake up.
You either slept well or you didnt.
if you slept well, you’re already doing great. Your body feels good. man, you’re in the top half of your class at least.
you go pee. if your stream is decent, again, you’re winning.
You have a little tea or coffee and something to eat unless your intermittent fasting, in which case, no food for you.
If you poop well, life is fine.
If you feel ok about the day, dont have too much of a headache, you’re way ahead.
then you work. hopefully it’s not too awful.
in any event, the time passes, whatever you’re doing, and you try to achieve something or other. probably it’s frustrating.
sometimes things go well…
Its all pretty blurry, soon anyway. And in the rearview mirror, hard to say wtf happened.
in any case, if you’re not broke, basically, you’re doing pretty good.
Later you see your spouse, if you have one and or your kids.
maybe they can stand you. maybe not.
you eat something. you consume some media. you express yourself. You get a bit of exercise.
perhaps you engage in some form of sexual activity if someone else is willing.
you go to sleep.
Then its the next day, pretty much the same. Hopefully you get a day off, in which case you do the same stuff but dont work. You try to accomplish something, but for fun. And no $. Maybe you travel and do the same thing, but somewhere else.
this is the vast majority of life. Really, what else is there? Am i missing something?
The only thing that gives me true pleasure, and its difficult, is to sit, close my eyes and let thoughts go.

Wife? Kids? Music? Art? None of that brings you pleasure?
I’m starting to feel sorry for you.
I enjoy when I see someone do a good deed for someone else, knowing no one else will ever know and thinking that no one saw them.
I enjoy watching my grandkids discover the world – the excitement, the fascination, the learning of lessons good and bad.
I enjoy watching the street dog we adopted last year become more civilized with each passing week as she learns what is acceptable behavior and what is not. It took a few months, but she no longer does unacceptable things when no one is looking. She understands that we are her pack and members of the pack don’t do those things.
And while I miss mingling with other random folks by going out each weekend, I’m learning to enjoy simply relaxing in the back yard with the family, beverages, good food and good tunes by the fire table. I have not been this slow paced in decades. Decades.
But I’m learning to enjoy it.
And it is easy on the bank account as an extra bonus.
T. Boone Pickens, a highly successful man, had a favorite poem by Saxon White Kessinger that he thought summarized his life, anybody’s life actually, very well.
You can read it here:
A final message from T. Boone Pickens shared before his passing on September 11, 2019
You better be doing what you enjoy, because when it’s all over the world will return to how it was without you.
July 3, 2020 at 9:43 PM #818639scaredyclassicParticipantWhat are the four noble truths? Buddhism’s famed four truths are called noble because they liberate us from suffering. They are the Buddha’s basic teaching, encapsulating the entire Buddhist path.
1. Suffering
Life always involves suffering, in obvious and subtle forms. Even when things seem good, we always feel an undercurrent of anxiety and uncertainty inside.2. The Cause of Suffering
The cause of suffering is craving and fundamental ignorance. We suffer because of our mistaken belief that we are a separate, independent, solid “I.” The painful and futile struggle to maintain this delusion of ego is known as samsara, or cyclic existence.3. The End of Suffering
The good news is that our obscurations are temporary. They are like passing clouds that obscure the sun of our enlightened nature, which is always present. Therefore, suffering can end because our obscurations can be purified and awakened mind is always available to us.4. The Path
By living ethically, practicing meditation, and developing wisdom, we can take exactly the same journey to enlightenment and freedom from suffering that the buddhas do. We too can wake up.July 3, 2020 at 10:01 PM #818640svelteParticipantI’m sorry, what kind of brownies do they serve at Deer Park?
July 4, 2020 at 12:27 AM #818641scaredyclassicParticipantTheyre very strict about no intoxicants. Thats why i dont drink anymore.

I’m with you brother. More power to you with whatever gets you through the night.
Would/could I choose that path? Never in a million years. I’m too addicted to the pleasures of the flesh.
But if it floats your boat…go for it dude. I’m the last person to criticize. I just want people to be happy.

…some purchase software (i.e. photoshop)
to create composite images like,…
others purchase stuff like peace of mind (i.e. silence)
…stuff like goodwill (i.e. perception of charity)
https://apnews.com/635b828ded6813ea66783869f32876c5
…stuff like a means to an end (i.e. political office)

the downside being, money buys lives
(bottom line) lives on a yuge scale
