Interesting, thanks for sharing. Seems like this “hour-glass” mirrors the trend in the rest of the country.
First item in this daily business report is a forecast for San Diego’s economy in 2016
I found this paragraph particularly interesting:
At the same time as demand for higher skilled and highly compensated positions continues to grow, lower wage jobs not easily replaced by machines or technology also increases. The result has been San Diego’s economy becomes ever more hour-glassed shaped as more jobs accumulate on the top and bottom, and fewer in the middle. This has significant implications for San Diego’s housing, income, education, and business needs beyond 2016.
Unfortunately there isn’t any discussion of what these implications are.
as I see things we are now in a somewhat peaceful world now tied together via trade and banking
as it exists now, too much “credit” money is trying to find return in a global economy with too much production capacity and not enough demand by “credit” worthy counter-parties…
those credit worthy “counter-parties” are the individuals with tech skills, capital and connections (i.e. those lucky people at the top)
those unfortunate individuals w/OUT tech skills, capital or connections are what make up the shrinking middle and ever growing lower class
if trends continue how this ends “peacefully” is not simple or easy (that is why the “implications” by the author of the article were not discussed)
its going to take sacrifice or resources from the “haves” and the mental understanding/work of the “have-nots” to find a “peacefully” solution
human nature being what it is, greed and the winner take all mentality is the mindset we see all too often at the top end AND perhaps lack of mental ability and inability or lack of interest to develop skill sets that are in economic demand (at the the bottom) tells me human civilization is in for a rough adjustment period…
