$14/hr = $98 for basically a whole day, minus gas expenses, minus supplies if any, minus taxes. Give her the raise and be happy she’s only asking for $14.

We’ve got a house that is shall we say unusual…never any questions asked. It all gets cleaned. Sometimes I’d like to see her reaction to the various rooms though…not for the prudish or faint-hearted.

$100 for 2100 sqft once a week. She spends 4 hours at the house. My wife set this up through handy which is a cleaning “broker” service. I had a feeling I was overpaying…. Can anyone recommend a good/trusted cleaner in the North County Area (or someone willing to commute to work there)? I’m sure I could cut out the middle man (handy) to save some money and have the same amount (or more) of the money going to the person actually doing the work.

According to my Mexican contacts, $100 per day is pretty much the going rate for house cleaning. This is from free-lance workers who are generally not authorized to work in the U.S. So sounds like your cleaner is just trying to “keep up with the Joneses”

My have always thought the going rate for these type of work is about $100 per day. If the husband is a day laborer and the wife is a house cleaner, that’s $200 per day x 20 days a month, so $4000 per month. given cost of living in SD, it would be hard to justify anything less.

That said, I’m with scaredy, we do it ourselves, and I pay my wife in purses.

I do my own cleaning. Put on the pair of headphone and with Marketplace, freakonomics or planet money (wonderful programs from NPR) and the hour just goes by in a jiffy.

Why does it take 8 hours to clean the house and why does it requires cleaning every 2 weeks.
