Marion, I hate to disappoint you but my charitable contributions in any given year are probably greater than yours over a given decade… or two. Does that make me a “caring, giving person”? I don’t know and don’t care. I do it because I enjoy it. It’s a purely selfish act on my part. Like most everything else in my life, if I don’t enjoy it, I don’t bother with it.
The particular charity for which I often end up at the Food4Less in Chula Vista – just to complete the picture – is the Eudist Home for Girls in Tijuana, which provides shelter, support and education for abused and homeless girls. Although I don’t like the idea that these girls are being inculcated into the Catholic tradition, the trade-off (abuse and homelessness) is a reasonable one. That the sisters don’t see the irony in their beloved, caring “God” not providing for these kids in the first place is, well, rich. But that’s another issue.
