It’s a perfect example of why Oregon, Washington and other states don’t want Californians moving to their state.
Maybe southern Californians more specifically.
July 9, 2014 at 8:34 AM #776297Rich ToscanoKeymasterNo, they are laughing because they think the shark just swam near the guy and scared him. When they realize he’s been bitten, the laughter comes to an abrupt halt.
Not even going to waste my time on the “native Californians are evil” nonsense.

You’re right, a great white shark near a swimmer in the ocean is hilarious, just hilarious.
I can’t stop laughing…..!

Having not seen a reasonable answer from you on any subject ever, I doubt I’ll get one now. But I am curious how you get from

I doubt you fooled anyone with this flailing attempt at misdirection.
I didn’t say I thought it was funny, as your comment would imply. I just pointed out the fact that the people on the video were laughing when they thought the guy was just scared, and stopped when they realized he’d actually been attacked.
I did this not to defend their sense of humor, or lack thereof, but because your original post incorrectly implied that they were knowingly laughing at someone being bitten by a shark.
July 10, 2014 at 7:56 AM #776360UCGalParticipantI have to agree with Rich on this. It was pretty clear they were laughing at the idea of the shark scaring the swimmers and did not know a swimmer had been bit till a while later – when the laughing abruptly ended.
Were they assholes? Absolutely. But not as callous as you make them out to be.
And what are you basing the native California thing on? Are you implying native American? Or are you implying someone born in California? And where is it implied, suggested, or anything, and why would it matter.
I totally agree the fishers are jerks. But you imply a lot of stuff that isn’t there.

We can add “native Californians” to Jews, gays, and Guatemalan children on the long list of groups that paramount has a problem with, and that all contribute somehow to his immense self-pity.
July 10, 2014 at 10:41 AM #776366AnonymousGuestTell us you’ve never laughed at a shark video.

You forgot teachers, cops, firefighters, etc. 😉
July 12, 2014 at 9:49 AM #776466scaredyclassicParticipantIt’s a thin line between comedy and tragedy. I recall being an intoxicated teen over 30 years ago and reading some “funny” comic strip in a news paper and weeping actual tears at the cruelty and sadness embodied in the “JOKES” .. really more crying at the thought that the artist thought other people might find it funny, then laughing at myself for weeping.
I was pretty intoxicated though. Normally I can handle reading the comics section without bawling.
The fishermen sound like douche bags on the tape. I expect they will be sued for failing to fish with reasonable care as they had hooked the shark and the swimmers came by. Also the municipality for allowing it in the pier. Settle with the city.

Was the swim sanctioned by the city? Did the swimmers pull a permit? Why should the city get sued in a case of two people doing what they think is fun clashing in a way that gets one of them hurt( not to mention the responsibility of the shark). If the fisherman was in violation of any law he should pay criminally and I guess something to the swimmer…but the swimmer took his own chances too. Small payout to “victim” if any.
July 12, 2014 at 9:59 AM #776469scaredyclassicParticipantfrom the video it sounds like the fishermen had the shark hooked for a while and were trying to reel him in. As plaintiff’s lawyer I’d argue the city shoudl not permit shark fishing in an area where people are swiming. If there were signage prohibiting shark fishing, then the city knew of th edanger and probably should have taken more steps to prohibit the fishermen from fishing for sharks. if there were no signage there should have been signage and the city was negligent for failing to prohibit shark fishing.
either way, seems liek a sympathetic case, because the fishermen think it’s hilarious that a shark they have ont he line is “jumping right on top” of the swimmer. That ‘s probably enough to get the jury worked up enough to want to stop people from shark fishing right there.
i’ll settlefor 500k.
