I understand your irritation, but driving a car with 30-year-old hubcaps on NYC roads, I probably wouldn’t have notice a few more scratches. This being said, I tend to stay away from any chain oil/tire/service places (including CostCow), opting to have my car worked on by independent mechanics when needed. Much more consistency than the chains that hire any h/s dropout.
I’ll make a slight exception for STS Tire in NJ, which always seemed to do a good job for family (and myself, when I used them).

Honestly, it’s more irritation more than anything else. To be fair, the folks that work @ Costco are very friendly and courteous. It’s just I wish they were more careful. I mean, it’s really impossible that sort of scratches to happen on the road. It’s not like the rims are curbed… And furthermore, some of the gashes are too deep to have happened from a simple car wash… Not to mention the car is washed by my detailer, whom I always go over the car over with after he is done…
Oh well. 1st world problem.. You know…
(Hey, I’m not one of those ridiculous costco shoppers that try to return a half eaten chicken, or return a plant that dies a year or two later…Sheesh… I’m actually sensitive to retailers, since it isn’t easy being a retailer in the U.S.)

http://www.chuckstirecenter.net/
Chuck is a real car guy. I’ve entrusted him with all the cars in my stable and he has yet to scratch a rim. I’ve even ordered custom rims through him.
We sit and talk cars every time I go in.
(PS – I don’t see Chuck in the photo on the web page. Did something happen to Chuck or is he taking the photo?)

April 24, 2014 at 9:39 PM #773305moneymakerParticipantI’m pretty sure I lost a few lug nut covers at Costco, but when i didn’t first notice the first one gone before leaving they told me after calling them later that they didn’t have them. So now they are all gone and I don’t have to care anymore about them forgetting to put them back on. I figured someone there must be selling them on Ebay. I’m not picky enough to go buy new ones for a 12 year old car.P.S- for our Miata we go to Discount Tire, got rid of the run flats as they were too expensive and gave a rougher ride.

Yes and no, but rather not go into it right at the moment…

Even with a few of the “collectibles” we’ve had over the years–never had a problem there.
April 25, 2014 at 8:08 AM #773325bababooeyParticipant
But looks like I won’t be going back there for tires again, either for my X5 or the 550, and they don’t stock the tires I like the miata or the A4 the C320 for which I don’t care about the rims….
A bit of advice. It’s hard trying to be pretentious but one of the rules (in the top 15) of the pretentious handbook is to never admit you shop at Costco, you are just too good for that!
Remember what the coach told you to repeat when you are in these serious situations like this “people like me”.

I actually like costco for everything else. Generally, really good service. I don’t care whether it’s hip or not….And frankly I could care less about car brands or labels, though I admit lots of people buy cars for no real value but the label…
But, as a business, if you’re going to advertise that you can do job X (like changing tires), the assumption here is you can do so without damaging customer rims…It’s really not that hard….
Or if costco simply would have said “sorry, we don’t work on cars with alloy wheels that will scratch with our tools/mounting service”…That’s fine too. I would go elsewhere that would most likely price match costco’s prices anyway. Or I would have bought the tires, and mounted them elsewhere… Probably should have done so, but I thought it would be convenient…
Apparently not…Oh well…Lesson learned..
April 25, 2014 at 8:33 AM #773328bibsoconnerParticipantI’ll add to Flu’s comments that not only should you not take a nice(r) car to Costco for tire work, that you should not take any car to Costco (I used Mission Valley Costco) for tire work. I took my ’96 Geo Prism (not a “nicer” care by most definitions, but runs great!) for 4 new tires a few years back. Everything went great and I drove the 2 miles back home. The next morning, not 1 but 2 tires were completely flat. To cut a long story short, they had not seated the tires well on the rims. The manager, a ~50yr old like myself blamed it on two things:
1) my old rusted rims
2) dumb 18 yr old kids he hiresHe was very nice and fixed everything, but it cost me half a day getting it sorted. I also had to replace one of the wheel studs recently because it was stripped. It’s a little hard to blame Costco definitely for this one (things wear out), but they are the main ones that have taken the wheels on and off.
I also agree that they are great for lots of other things. I’m tending to shy away from them for appliances however. I’m beginning to wonder if they get lower quality lots. I notice that I have quite a few problems with vacuums, electronics, washers, dryers from Costco. On the plus side, they have a very generous return policy.
Best of luck with your BMW. If you get sick of it and want to trade for my Geo Prism feel free to msg me.
