got up real early at the insistence of a colleague to go hike DRIPPING SPRINGS trail whcih si just 5 miles outside temecula, about 10 mi. from the 15 fwy. feels very very remote for being so close to town, practically in my backyard. id been there before once but hadnt made it far, hot kids rebelled, but we hiked the 13.6 mile r/t trail wtih 2800 feet in elevation … my feet hurt but im stoked about having such a cool place right near temecua. if you’re in the area, you should check this place out, it’s right down the 79 just passt vail lake on the right, it’s a national forest station with camping and a trailhead. awesome view. a less well known locla treasure…
I almost stepped on one while hiking many years ago. Scared the hell out of me. Thankfully, it skittered away pretty quickly, but definitely not a fun experience.

Russ, I just heard from a friend a couple of weeks ago that they get their dogs trained to avoid rattlesnakes. They live in a rural setting, too, and have quite a few rattlesnakes around their house. If you want the info, let me know.
I just won some rattle gaiters on ebay! I’m gonna do a 20 mile hike up that mountain once a month until I can’t any longer. In my gaiters with a knife for lion attacks.
