The house was purchased as new construction with the photovoltaic system being an option. The panels more resemble tiles than traditional panels.
This covers about 80% of our daily usage. I run two servers and a desktop that are on 24/7. All lighting is LED or CFL. Not a lot of TV usage by American standards.
March 12, 2014 at 8:28 AM #771778biggoldbearParticipantInteresting, I wonder if adding it on to new construction helped with the price?
March 14, 2014 at 9:00 PM #771871moneymakerParticipantDoes anybody with solar have any warnings before I do it? This system looks good http://www.solarpanelstore.com/solar-power-packages.cse-medium-grid-tie.enphase_m250_grid_tie_packages.gte_m250_6600.info.1.html

Which is why it should have been mandated for all new construction for the past many years (at least the past decade, IMO), especially in the southwest.
It makes no sense when Germany is installing more solar capacity than we are. We suck. 🙁

Family Size: 2 adults/1 childrenCovers almost all of our needs. Changed all our bulbs to LED, the lights outside are on day light based timers. Changed the fridge to be energy efficient.
I would recommend getting micro inverters (one per panel) instead of one for the entire system.

Uh, maybe you mean builders makes a ton of profit, not home owner saving a ton. My system was installed August 2012. My 3.6kWh system cost me $16k, which is slightly cheaper than creechrr’s system he got upgraded from the builder.March 17, 2014 at 2:01 PM #771975anParticipant.

Not anymore… Good policies make a difference.
More solar capacity in the last 18 months than in the last 30 years

Thanks for the video, Brian. It’s about time we did this! How sad that we’ve only now passed Germany? Germany, for God’s sake! (I’m assuming you’ve been there and know what I’m talking about.) We have a lot of catching up to do relative to where we *should* be.
March 27, 2015 at 10:03 AM #784229svelteParticipantJust got a quote.
15,300 kWh / yr
$33.5KLess than I was expecting. Includes micro inverters.
March 27, 2015 at 10:06 AM #784230anParticipantWow, that’s a huge system. I thought I was a big energy user, yet my 3.8kWh system is enough to keep me in Tier 1 most of the year.
March 27, 2015 at 10:19 AM #784231svelteParticipantOK…they said it would generate 15.3 kWh/year
Proposal says it is 10.4 kW system.
What is the math to get from 10.4 kW system to 15.3 kWh/year?
(and yes we use a lot of electricity unfortunately)
