ok, so I finally bought a Prius, got a great deal on a 2011, only problem previous owner had lost one of the smart keys.
I have heard horror stories if you lose both keys, so I want to get a backup made ASAP. Has anyone used a locksmith service that is able to duplicate the “smart key” for a reasonable price?
Toyota dealership quoted me $110 for programming, $95 for little metal thingy that goes inside smart key, and $261 for key fob, grand total of $466!!!
I have found a place that does it for $250, just wondering how tricky is this?
I had Mossy Toyota replace and reprogram one of my smart key fobs about a year and a half ago. Total cost was $273. I could have dorked around with an eBay key fob but it just didn’t seem worth it to me.
The smart key feature is never something that i would have ordered, but I have to say I really love it. Walk up to the car, the dome lights come on, you touch the handle and the door unlocks, you get in and drive away, all without ever pulling the keys out of your pocket.
Last time I copied a smart key I used “Busy Bee Locksmith” they are located on Kettner Blvd, I believe. I went to them so I don’t know what they charge to come out. They cut and programmed a key I bought off the internet, dealer wouldn’t do it, they claimed it would hurt their machine.This was a 3rd key I had made so it was no problem.
