Try Ba-Ren over on Diane ave. in Clairemont (go West on Clairemont Mesa from the 805, turn right on Diane, it's on the right). After the change in ownership (over a year ago I think) of Spicy City, I started going there.
They have two menus- one for 'mericans and one for Chinese, and the items are totally, totally different. I love their "dry cooked lamb" but they have many wonderful, spicy dishes which burn you twice. Lots of fish and seafood dishes too.

I forgot about this place. Yes, it's pretty good. Has a ala carte rack that serves pretty spicy stuff if you're into it.
