How do you count the ones in the garage? I think you could do a similar study where you count how many cars are parked on the street in 1 block during the middle of the day. My guess is 92104 and 92105 would be tied for first place. Maybe we could call it “the welfare ratio”. Although the beaches might skew this study.
April 5, 2013 at 7:43 AM #761032NotCrankyParticipantI feel really bad for that redneck living in 4s.
April 5, 2013 at 8:15 AM #761033The-ShovelerParticipantI have always driven a truck since the day I started driving,
(very useful my wife loves it).
I don’t own a cowboy hat, but I do have a nice pair of dress-up boots.
I wear a conical paddy hat when working in the yard sometimes.
My neighbors are very confused,April 5, 2013 at 10:52 AM #761041bearishgurlParticipant
How do you count the ones in the garage? MM, 92104 and 92105, as well as the beach areas boast many, many thousands of retired homeowners, as well as small and/or useless garages. Did you ever consider that many of the homes in your area might be paid off and occupied by longtime resident-retirees?
Unlike the newer PUD sudivisions in the stix where residents park on every inch of very narrow streets and “easements” after 5 pm and weekends, being able to park on a nice tree-lined wide street in metro SD in a “stable” hood (where there has never been much property distress) is a good thing, right?
Just be happy that you didn’t have 75% or more homes on your street fall into default since 2006 and are not now living with the HUGE squat-mod group, just waiting for the day they can “get out” with their heads above water.
April 5, 2013 at 7:58 PM #761051RealityParticipant
I believe more often than not certain predictions can be made about a person based on the vehicle a person drives.
Are these assumptions/predictions 100% accurate? No
And yet I maintain that there is a strong correlation.
With that in mind, I decided to develop a ratio that can be used to draw certain conclusions about a city or community right down to the street level.
I call it the Redneck Ratio.
Method: In a given area, using google maps street view, I count the number of pickup trucks/10 houses in a cul de sac.
Yes, I am making certain assumptions about pickup truck drivers in general. That’s what marketing is all about.
A few example ratios:
Temecula: 0.3
Murrieta: 0.6
4S: 0.1Seems about right to me.
It seems this survey would be WAY more useful if the street views were all done on weekends.

Who parks in the garage?
But seriously does it matter? It’s not like the differences between neighborhoods would likely be much changed including garaged cars.
April 6, 2013 at 11:30 AM #761058spdrunParticipantWould walkable neighborhoods with a large ratio of people walking or biking to work skew the ratio? My area (in NYC, so it’s different) has cars parked on the street basically all of the time, since people tend to use them either for construction/delivery work, or for weekend trips out of town.
April 7, 2013 at 1:49 PM #761076AnonymousGuestI’m reminded of a metric I used to use when trying to figure out the exact degree of crappiness of crappy rental neighborhoods…I would go the the closest convenience store and calculate the ratio of beer to malt liquor in the cooler. The more malt liquor, the worse the area.
The tie breaker was the presence of these gems in the cooler:
April 8, 2013 at 2:45 PM #761095UCGalParticipantInteresting stereotype.
We have a truck, but it’s garaged. Does that make us less redneck? Do small trucks only get a partial redneck – but the king cab, full size, duel wheel style ones give you a percentage more than 1 of redneck-ness?
Does the age of the truck matter? Is newer more redneck, or less?
Does having a redneck matter? Or just the vehicle?
What if the other family car is a hybrid – does that cancel the redneck factor?

In my original post I admit it’s not a perfect system, but I don’t think it’s far off either.
I would add +1 or +2 for a lifted truck or a dually.
As far as your situation is concerned, I’d say you’re redneck based on the defensive nature of your post – not b/c of your truck. And if I’m not mistaken don’t you live in Clairmont?
Small nissan or toyota type “pickups” are not real trucks – I wouldn’t count them in the ratio.

Don’t live in Clairemont… but I am Clairemont adjacent. (UC in my name is a BIG hint.)Didn’t think I was being defensive. I thought I was being inquisitive. I’m a redhead… didn’t know I was a redneck also. I learned something new today.
