My company gives PTO (rather than separate vacation and sick time). Newhires get more than 3 weeks.
February 14, 2013 at 2:29 PM #759391UCGalParticipantMy company also gives PTO (combined sick/pay) – it’s a hair over 4 weeks for new hires (22 days).
If you aren’t sick, and don’t have sick kids – that’s 4 weeks +.
I heard recently that Qualcomm starts out with 3 weeks vacation and unlimited sick.
February 14, 2013 at 2:37 PM #759392CoronitaParticipantWhat vacation?
seriously, some companies have a no accrued vacation policy now….
You ask for time off, subject to schedules and that’s it….Technically it’s unlimited…Practically, not a smart career move if you abuse it.
Intuit is somewhere along the same line as QC…
February 14, 2013 at 2:45 PM #759393spdrunParticipantThis is why I’m freelance. If I were to go full time, I’d probably move somewhere outside of Dumberica first, since most countries are more civilized about vacation time rules than we are. I’m a dual citizen so I can legally work anywhere in the EU as well as in the US.
February 14, 2013 at 2:49 PM #759394carlsbadworkerParticipantMy company gives paid vacation starting from 3 weeks on day one and up to 5 weeks for people who are here for over 15 years.
Sick leave is separate and I have accumulated more than 2 months…so who is counting anymore? But most employers give PTO right now. It would be a better deal for me because of the sick leave that I have accumulated. But since its vacation time policy is not bad either, I am not complaining.

Whatever. there’s pluses and minuses for everything… No company in their right mind would pay the equivalent as a contractor in today’s market in what my current company does already. Contractors are also not eligible for stock plans, deferred compensation, profit sharing, and the likes. I don’t care so much about base pay as I care about the rest of the compensation package, because as far as I’m concerned, base pay is that……It basically pays for the bills….
February 14, 2013 at 3:26 PM #759397spdrunParticipantWhat fun is getting paid a lot if you have no time to enjoy it?
The “other stuff” is where my offers on short-sales and fork-lost homes come in. I intend to have enough rentals to pay basic living expenses (food, housing, health insurance) within the next 1.5 years. If I get any one of the properties I’m on offer with and am able to rent it out at market, my housing expense will already drop to no more than a couple hundred per month. Anything additional that I get from contracting or stock market gameplay will just be icing on the cake.
If I can’t live like a European in the US, while having the benefits of living in the US, there’s no point in remaining here.

you the man.
February 14, 2013 at 3:34 PM #759399spdrunParticipantI have no interest in being the man. Just in never EVER having to kowtow to him.

Well, I’m glad you’ve got your entire life figured out and everything is a okay….You get a cookie.
February 14, 2013 at 4:01 PM #759402The-ShovelerParticipantMay the world not throw you a giant turd,
Almost invariably the world will throw you a giant turd that will set you back 10 years sometime before you reach 50.
If you’re lucky you will realize it was just the turd you needed at just the right time.
I know it does not make sense to you now.February 14, 2013 at 4:01 PM #759401spdrunParticipantHardly. I was just very lucky a few years back, and it would be criminally stupid of me to waste that kind of luck. G-d helps those who help themselves.
Happy VD!
February 14, 2013 at 4:08 PM #759403spdrunParticipantBelieve me, the world has already thrown me many turds, starting with a case of a polio-like virus when I was 6 months old; doctor didn’t have much hope for me leading a normal life or even being able to walk. All the more reason to attempt to live a supra-normal life – I’ve always been an ornery, contrary sort of guy.
In short: time to start tossin’ em back like a chimp on crystal meth.
